Velingrad is located in the central part of Chepino Copse, the most beautiful part of the western Rhodope Mountains.
Legends say that once upon a time Orpheus lived here and that the energy of this area gave enormous strength to Spartacus- the leader of the ancient Roman slaves.
There is historical and cultural evidence that Thracians inhabited this territory during 5 BC and 6 BC. Most solid are the last vestiges of the Bessians- hillocks and necropolis; remnants of villages and bulwarks were found, too.
The ancient historians Herodotus and Thukidit are the main sources of information about this age: ‘Thrace was the land of bliss where Dionysus dwelt.’
There was a temple of Dionysus in the Pangaea Mountain where priests of the Bessians served. There was an Oracle similar to Pitia of the Delphic Oracle. Even more important was the temple of Dionysus in the Rhodope Mountains. That is where Alexander the Great and the father of Octavian Augustus came to visit the Oracle to predict the way out of the campaign against the Thracian tribe.
